Put an Android phone on its charger at the place you want to monitor — home, a relative's apartment, the server closet. Any phone will do; it just has to stay there.

How the dead-man's switch works

Every self-contained gadget has the same flaw: when it dies, it goes quiet — and silence looks exactly like "nothing is wrong". Pro turns that silence into the alarm. Your phone checks in every 5 minutes; if the check-ins stop mid-blackout — router down, battery flat — our servers alert the people watching on its behalf.

Establishing silence takes time: we wait 15 minutes of it, then a further 2 in case it was a blip, so this path alerts about 17 minutes in. A phone with its own mobile-data SIM reports the outage directly instead and has your contacts called in about 3 — the single biggest reliability upgrade you can make.

Questions, answered

Does it still detect the outage when the battery is already at 100%?

Yes — that's the core of the design. OutagePing watches whether the charger is supplying power, not whether the battery is charging. When mains power dies, the charger's voltage disappears instantly, and OutagePing reacts — even at 100%.

What if my Wi-Fi router dies in the blackout too?

The local alarm always works. So the phone can still reach us, we recommend a SIM with mobile data in the monitoring phone — cell towers have backup power. And Pro's dead-man's switch alerts your people even if the phone can't reach us at all: we notice the silence and alert on its behalf.

Can I stop a false alarm?

Yes. The first stage is a quiet popup with a STOP button and a configurable delay before anything loud or external happens. Unplugged the phone on purpose? One tap and nothing else fires.

Why is the app free but Pro paid?

The app itself — power-failure detection and the on-phone alarm — is free forever. Pro is what reaches other people: our servers wake everyone watching the phone, from a machine that keeps running after the phone is gone. That is the part with an ongoing cost, and the dead-man's switch is part of it.

Why alert people in the app instead of texting them?

Because a text can't wake anyone. It arrives at the mercy of the phone's silent mode, and a power cut happens at 3am more often than at noon. An OutagePing alert comes through on the alarm channel and can sound through Do Not Disturb — it is built to wake someone, which is the entire job. It also costs nothing per alert, so there is no monthly allowance to run out of on a bad night, and the person alerted can open the app and see whether the phone is still reporting rather than being left with one message and no way to check.

How do I add someone who should be woken?

They install the free app — there is nothing to sign up for, no email and no password. You create a 6-digit code on the monitoring phone, they open the app, say it is the phone they carry, and type the code in. That is the whole setup, about half a minute. The code works once and expires in 30 minutes, and nobody hands out a phone number. Either of you can end it at any time, and they only ever see whether that phone has power, whether it is checking in, and its history of failures — nothing else about your account.

Is this a certified safety system?

No. OutagePing is a consumer alerting aid and shouldn't be the only safeguard for life-critical equipment. It's the difference between finding out in minutes and finding out too late — but please keep professional systems where lives depend on it.
