A power outage alarm for an elderly parent's home

A power cut at your own home is an inconvenience. At an elderly parent's home it can be something else entirely: no heating in winter, no cooling in a heatwave, a fridge full of insulin, a stairlift that stops, an oxygen concentrator that doesn't restart itself, a medical alert pendant whose base station just went dark.
And here's the difficult part that adult children discover: they often don't call. Sometimes because they don't want to be a bother. Sometimes because the phone they'd call from is a cordless handset that needs mains power. Sometimes because at 2 a.m. they simply slept through it.
What you actually need it to do
This is a different problem from ordinary home monitoring, and it has some unusual requirements:
- It must require nothing from them. No app to open, no button to press, no new habit. Anything that depends on the person acting will fail exactly when they're unwell.
- It must alert you, not them. A siren in their hallway is the wrong output. You are the person who can do something.
- It must escalate. A notification you sleep through is not an alert. A phone call that rings until you answer is.
- It must not feel like surveillance. No cameras, no microphones, no location tracking. Dignity matters, and intrusive systems get unplugged.
Why a spare phone works well here
A retired Android phone plugged into a socket in their hallway is close to ideal for this. It has its own battery, so it survives the outage it's reporting. With a cheap data SIM it has its own internet connection, so it doesn't care that their router is dead. And it watches exactly one thing — whether the wall socket still has power. It doesn't listen, it doesn't film, and it doesn't track anyone.
From their point of view, nothing changes. There's a phone charging in the corner. From your point of view, you get a text and a phone call within minutes of the power going out at their address.
The scenario that matters most
Think about a long outage. A self-contained gadget alerts you at the start, then its own battery runs out and it goes quiet. If you were asleep for that first alert, the silence afterwards is indistinguishable from everything being fine.
That's why a dead-man's switch matters more here than anywhere else. The phone checks in with a server every few minutes; if the check-ins stop, the server alerts your contacts itself. So the alert still happens when the phone is dead — which, in a long winter outage at an elderly relative's home, is precisely the moment you most need to know.
Setting it up on their behalf
- Take a spare Android phone (8.0 or newer). Do the whole setup at your own home first, so you're not troubleshooting in their living room.
- Add a cheap prepaid data SIM. In a blackout, mobile masts stay up on backup power while home broadband does not.
- Add yourself and one sibling or neighbor as the emergency contacts — someone who lives close enough to physically go round.
- Plug it into a wall socket that isn't controlled by a light switch, in a spot where it won't be tidied away. Behind the TV or in the hall is usually safe.
- Disable battery optimization for the app, and turn off any "battery protection" or "bypass charging" feature the manufacturer added — those can make Android misreport the charger.
- Run a test. Pull the plug and confirm you get the text and the call. Then do it once more a week later. An untested alarm is a guess.
Be clear about what this is and isn't
This is a power-failure alert, not a medical alarm and not a care system. It won't detect a fall, and it shouldn't be the only safeguard for life-critical equipment — anything genuinely life-sustaining needs a proper battery backup and a professional monitoring plan. What it does do is close a specific, common gap: the hours between the power failing and anyone realizing.
