Smart plug vs a phone, for knowing the power failed
Both can notice a power cut. Only one of them can still tell you about it afterwards, and the reason is not a matter of quality — it is how each is built.
The one difference that decides it
A smart plug reports over your Wi-Fi. A power cut takes out the router at the same instant it takes out the plug. So the device has noticed something worth telling you and has just lost the only means it had of telling you. Most plugs surface the event when power returns and the router has booted — which is a log entry, not an alert, and by then a freezer has had six hours to thaw.
A phone carries its own battery, so it keeps running through the outage. With a cheap prepaid data SIM it also carries its own connection, so it can report the failure while the failure is still happening.

When a smart plug is the better buy
Genuinely, and this is worth saying plainly rather than burying:
- You want to switch something back on remotely — a router, a pump, a router-that-needs-power-cycling. We cannot do that at all.
- You want to know how much electricity an appliance uses. A metering plug answers that; we do not measure consumption.
- You already run a UPS with the router on it, so the Wi-Fi survives the cut and the plug can still speak.
- You want per-appliance detail — which of four things lost power — rather than whether the place has power at all.
Plenty of people have both. They answer different questions: a plug is about one appliance, a phone is about the building.
What a phone gives you that a plug cannot
The dead-man's switch is the part with no equivalent. Every sensor in your house shares one weakness: if it dies, it goes quiet, and quiet looks exactly like everything being fine. Because a phone checks in with our servers, its silence is something we can notice on your behalf and act on — so a monitoring phone whose battery finally gives out still results in your people being told.
The other is reaching other people. A plug notifies its account owner. If you are the account owner and you are asleep, on a flight, or the person the alert is about, that is nobody. Anyone you hand a six-digit code to is woken on their own phone, at alarm volume, with no account to create.
How fast each one tells you
- Smart plug, no UPS: when the power comes back, and the router with it.
- Smart plug on a UPS: seconds, for as long as the battery lasts.
- Phone with a data SIM: about three minutes to your watchers; seconds for the alarm in the building itself.
- Phone on Wi-Fi only: about seventeen minutes, because the router is gone and we are working from the phone's silence rather than its report.
Questions people ask
Can a smart plug tell me when the power goes out?
It can detect it, but usually cannot tell you at the time. A smart plug reports over your Wi-Fi, and a power cut takes out the router at the same instant it takes out the plug. Most only surface the event once power is restored and the router has come back, which can be hours later.
What about a smart plug on a UPS?
That helps, and it is a real setup: the UPS keeps the router and the plug alive, so an alert can get out. It costs more, needs the plug and the router on the same UPS, and it lasts as long as the battery does. A phone already has its own battery and, with a SIM, its own connection.
Is a phone actually reliable as a power sensor?
For this one job it is well suited. It watches the charger's power feed rather than the battery, so it notices within seconds even at 100% charge, and it keeps running on its own battery for hours afterwards. What it cannot do is switch anything back on, or measure how much electricity an appliance is using.
Which should I use for a freezer?
If you want to know while it is happening, a phone. If you want to know how much the freezer costs to run, or to power-cycle it remotely, a smart plug. They answer different questions, and plenty of people have both.
